Third and Final Photoblog from Europe

  • We started by performing in the Hague, along Holland’s northern coast. Our hotel was right on the beach, which Vantanai Sae-Li found refreshing. (F Chun)
  • From the Hague we traveled to Switzerland through France where, at a rest stop, emcee Leeshai Lemish was found shopping for his new diet plan. (TK Kuo)
  • Performing in Lausanne, a quiet lakeside town just outside Geneva, these are some of the scenes from our theater’s roof. (TK Kuo)
  • This photo of sunset over Lake Geneva was taken from the theater rooftop right before a performance. (TK Kuo) Moonrise over the Swiss Alps. (TK Kuo)
  • Ever had Evian mineral water? Well, this is where it comes from Evian France, just across from the Swiss border. (TK Kuo)
  • A look from Evian out to Lake Geneva, which the French call Lac Léman. (TK Kuo)
  • Spring is in full bloom in Evian. (Annie Li)
  • And back in Geneva, so are the tulips. (TK Kuo)
  • On a bright sunny afternoon in Geneva, not far from the a huge Rolex store, we found joyous Spanish musicians livening up the streets. (Annie Li)
  • And, of course, there has to be at least one photo of Lake Geneva’s famed water jet—Jet d'Eau, literally meaning jet of eau. Or, in Spanish—Aqua Jet. (Annie Li)
  • After Switzerland we returned to perform in Germany’s Ludwigsberg. The city is just outside Stuttgart, the illustrious “cradle of the auto industry” where the car was invented and home to Mercedez-Benz and Porsche. Unmoved, Henry Huang (left) and Mark Gao get ready for a show as usual (F Chun).
  • From Germany we took two days traveling to Sweden where, on the way to Stockholm we stopped at Bauhaus along the coast. (TK Kuo)
  • The Bauhaus Castle was burned by Russian political prisoners who escaped across the frozen bay. (TK Kuo)
  • Cirkus Stockholm, where Shen Yun performed for the fourth straight year. (TK Kuo)
  • Stockholm City Hall, home to the Nobel Prize banquet. (TK Kuo)
  • Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company group photo in front of Stockholm City Hall. (F Chun)
  • Stockholm’s Gamla stan, or Old Town, with a view of the Tyska Kyrkan (“German Church”) steeple and spire. (TK Kuo)
  • Busy ports of Stockholm (See if you can spot cellist/photographer TK Kuo). (Annie Li) Shen Yun in front of the Swedish Royal Palace—notice the blue guard in the bottom right corner…. (TK Kuo) Unsuspectingly guarding away…. (Annie Li)
  • Unmoved, even as our dancers pose for a scene from the dance number: My Beloved Yi Village. (Annie Li)
  • Stockholm harbor at dusk (taking pictures while bicycling is not easy, ok?). (Annie Li)
  • Stockholm harbor at not dusk (Annie Li).
  • From Stockholm we traveled for three days to Vienna, stopping on the way to visit the quiet streets of Prague…. (TK Kuo)
  • And here come Shen Yun. It’s not every day a group of 90-some Chinese-looking people visit these streets. (TK Kuo)
  • If you notice, though, every one is walking on the cobbled street. See the small white Chinese buffet sign on the right? We didn’t stop there. (TK Kuo)
  • We then crossed Prague’s Vltava River. (TK Kuo)
  • On the Charles Bridge, which has a nice view looking back at the Praha Castle. (F Chun)
  • On the other side, we reached the Old Town Bridge Tower on the Charles Bridge. (TK Kuo)
  • Then we approached the Old Town Square. (TK Kuo)
  • And Old Clock Tower mounted on the southern wall of Old Town City Hall. (Annie Li)
  • Installed in 1410, this is the world’s oldest working astronomical clock. That’s all very nice, but can anyone figure out what time it is? (Annie Li)
  • The top clock, with the trumpeter above it, has the answer. (TK Kuo)
  • Still on the way to Vienna, we stopped in the German capital, and so sights ranging from the Berlin Victory Column from 1873…. (TK Kuo)
  • To the site of the Berlin Wall. (TK Kuo)
  • The Berlin Wall, seen from the former East Germany side. (TK Kuo)
  • And, of course, the Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of Berlin and a former entry point to the capital. (TK Kuo)
  • The Brandenburg Gate, rear view. (TK Kuo)
  • And finally the Reichstag, which houses the German parliament. (TK Kuo)
  • Finally in Vienna, where before and after our three performances we had opportunities to visit highlights like Schönbrunn Palace. (TK Kuo)
  • The rooftop of Empress Sissi’s summer palace. (Annie Li)
  • The Schönbrunn Garden. (TK Kuo)
  • The Schönbrunn Garden. (TK Kuo)
  • No, this is not Versailles again, still Schönbrunn, known in German simply as: Das Schloss Schönbrunn von der Gloriette. (TK Kuo)
  • Some of our dancers posing with a statue of Vienna’s musical greatest of the greats—Mozart. (Annie Li)
  • And in the city itself, we saw Wiener Rathaus—Vienna City Hall—towering high above the trees. (F Chun)
  • Austria’s National Library…. (F Chun)
  • …and the Vienna Natural History Museum. (TK Kuo)
  • But a real treat for us was attending a Brahms concert at the resplendent Musikverein Wien. (TK Kuo)
  • Their curtain call. (F Chun)
  • After Vienna, we visited the Austrian-Hungarian border, where we found this interesting monolith and statues of Christian saints (TK Kuo).
  • We visited a small town where locals live on marshes in between cattails. (Annie Li)
  • Violinist-blogger James Hwang probably pondering profound perplexing philosophical questions, such as: Why am I here and where am I? (TK Kuo)
  • The Danube River, running through the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava. While we were performing there, Bratislava was also hosting the 2011 World Hockey Championship. (TK Kuo)
  • Our last stop was Bratislava. Viewed from our hotel, the sun was beginning to set on the hills above the city, and on our 2011 Europe Tour…. (Annie Li)
  • Goodbye Europe—see you next time! (F Chun)
  • And here we are, back in the United States after tour, posing for a group photo on May 9 just outside baggage claim at Newark Liberty International Airport. (TK Kuo)
  • Dancers from each of Shen Yun’s three companies reunite in New York.
  • We’re now in Berlin waiting for our flight back to New York tomorrow morning. Our 2011 season tour of Europe finished yesterday in Bratislava, but before we begin preparing for next year, we wanted to share with you a bit of where we’ve been this past month. Our last photoblog ended in London, and from there we traveled to the Netherlands, where we continue…
